Arran Textiles promotes traditional textile crafts and produces teaching materials for teachers, craft groups and individuals to demonstrate and introduce the skills in school and in the community.

Workshops in Traditional Textile Studies are run on the island, accredited by the Lifelong Learning Centre at the University of Strathclyde.

In the past five years the company has taken part in several European projects with partners from Germany, Italy, Ireland, Austria, Iceland and Estonia.

From this work, the company has developed a programme of training workshops for practising craftspeople to improve their business skills to support their craftwork. These workshops are being run on the Scottish mainland and will soon be expanding to America.

Arran Textiles has its origins in the outreach programme of the Senior Studies Institute at the University of Strathclyde.

In 1992 a course in traditional textile studies was set up to bring together women over 50 to break the isolation often prevalent in rural communities and to provide a learning opportunity.

Arran Textiles is a company limited by guarantee, managed by a board of directors.

This website aims to promote our activities, keep informed those who are interested in what we are trying to do and provide a forum for further debate on topics related to sustainable rural communities. We look forward to hearing from you.
